KINDERGARTEN

We will be learning about the elements of music in music class by singing, playing instruments, and moving our bodies.  We will be singing songs from around the world, as well as playing lots of traditional singing games, including "Skip to my Lou," "Thread and Needle" and "Doggie, Doggie."

GRADES 1 - 3

We will be exploring music from around the world through singing, moving, listening, and playing classroom instruments.  Students explore all of the elements of music in age appropriate ways.

These students will present an Advent Concert on December 10, 2010.  We will begin learning music for the program early in the school year.  Look for more information about this concert later in the fall.

GRADES 4 - 5

We will be learning about the elements of music (Form, Dynamics, Tempo, Pitch, Harmony, Rhythm, Melody and Meter) through singing, listening, movement, and making music on our classroom instruments.

4th and 5th graders will be presenting a concert on March 4, 2011, titled "A World of Music."  This concert will feature singing, instruments and movement from around the world.

During the 4th Quarter, 4th and 5th graders will learn to play the recorder.  Look for ordering information after the first of the year.

GRADE 6

Sixth graders will be learning about the periods of music history:  Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th Century.  They will study composers, musical styles and instrumentations.  They will listen to and analyze music from all of these periods of history.

During second semester, 6th graders will review all of the music theory they've learned so far at IW, and then will apply that theory to ensemble playing.  We will develop large recorder ensembles, hand chime ensembles, and perhaps a combination of both.

Due to the expanded 6th grade music curriculum, these students will not be performing in a traditional music concert or program this year.  We hope there will be opportunities for the ensembles to play at mass later in the school year.

GRADES 7-8

We will be looking at music in terms of how it applies to the world around us.  We are listening to music from different cultures and different time periods, as well as analyzing contemporary music.  We apply the elements of music (Form, Dynamics, Tempo, Pitch, Harmony, Rhtyhm, Melody and Meter) to our analysis and discussion.

Our project for the second semester is the production of a Broadway musical, Annie. Jr."  This student led show will feature lots of acting, singing and dancing.  Students will design and create everything in the show.  "Annie, Jr." is scheduled for Friday, May 6, 2011.
